2023 Campus Summit
“RENEW”

Are you a campus minister/chaplain, church staff person, or post-secondary faculty/staff who desires to reach out to post-secondary students? Then the Campus Summit is for you! We are excited to be in-person again after four years!

The Summit is our strategic gathering for vision, inspiration, and learning. Our theme is RENEW, and we are anticipating what Holy Spirit will do as we slow down to wait and listen to His voice, and one another. Participate in worship with your peers and keynote speakers with interactive sessions about thriving spiritually for engagement missionally. We are thrilled that Ken Shigematsu is joining as our main plenary speaker along with Dave Wells, Andy Gabruch, and Nancy Engels.

You will also have the opportunity to choose from one of two Vancouver adventures - either cycling the Sea Wall or exploring the aquarium.

David Wells

David Wells has served as general superintendent of The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC) since May 2008. The PAOC has over 1,200 affiliated churches, satellites, and church plants, 3,700 credentialed ministers and a constituency of close to 265,000 people across Canada. Previously he served as a district superintendent (BC/Yukon) and in local church ministry in BC, Alberta, and Ontario.

Dave serves as the President of the Pentecostal Charismatic Churches of North America. He is Vice-Chair of the Pentecostal World Fellowship and chairs the PWF’s Christian Unity Commission. He regularly participates in inter-communion dialogues and forums.

Dave completed his undergraduate studies in theology at Vanguard College in Edmonton, Alberta, and has a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry from Briercrest Seminary, Saskatchewan. He has been awarded three honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees (McMaster Divinity College, Briercrest Biblical Seminary and by the Pentecostal Bible and Leadership Institute, Malawi.

Dave has served in sports chaplaincy at six Olympic Games, six Commonwealth Games and two Pan Am Games. He was chair of the multi-faith committee which organized chaplaincy at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, at the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and at the Invictus Games Toronto 2017.

Dave and his wife, Susan, who is also an active speaker and writer, live in Burlington, Ontario. They have three children—Shannon (Eric), Jonathan (Melissa) and Jordan (Justine)—and eight grandchildren, one of whom is in heaven.

Ken Shigematsu

Ken Shigematsu is the Senior Pastor of Tenth Church in Vancouver, BC, one of the largest and most diverse city-center churches in Canada. He is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal awarded to Canadians in recognition for their outstanding contribution to the country. Before entering pastoral ministry, he worked for the Sony Corporation in Tokyo. Ken is the author of the award-winning bestsellers ‘God in My Everything’ and ‘Survival Guide for the Soul,’ and his recently released book (May 2023) ‘Now I Become Myself.’ Ken lives in Vancouver with his wife, Sakiko, and their son, Joey.

Do you ever feel that no matter what you do or how much you achieve, it’s never enough? The experience of shame is more common than we think. It isn’t confined to people who have failed or gone through trauma or who were told as children they would never amount to anything. People who are immensely successful also struggle with this sense that they are deficient in some way.

Drawing on scripture, spiritual formation classics, and psychology and using a rich variety of stories from his own life, Ken Shigematsu shows how a deep, experiential encounter with the love of God can heal us of our shame, make us whole, and inspire us to fulfill our purpose by making a unique contribution to the world.

The Fear of Not Being Enough

In this session Ken describes his own experience of shame as well as other people who struggle with a sense of not being enough. He also shares spiritual practices that awaken us to God’s love, free us from shame, and live with greater lightness of being.

Fulfilling Our Potential

This session begins with the story of Ken’s friend Peter Ash who experienced shame growing up because of his albinism (a rare genetic condition characterized by the absence of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes). Thanks to his mother’s fierce love and an encounter with Christ, Peter was able to overcome his setbacks and become a successful businessman and a powerful advocate for vulnerable children with albinism in Tanzania. This session will show us how coming into a conscious awareness of God’s love for us causes our shame to recede and helps experience the joy of becoming a fruitful person.

Nancy Engels

Nancy Engels has been engaged in campus ministry both in the USA and Canada discipling students, mentoring staff, and speaking at retreats. Currently, Nancy works for the City of Surrey in British Columbia. Nancy loves spending time with her four children and grandchildren. She also has a passion for the creative arts including watercolour painting and quilting. Nancy’s teaching degree is from Western Washington University in Bellingham, where she was involved in campus ministry as a student leader.

Andy Gabruch

Infobesity: Finding Purpose in an Over-Saturated Digital World  

The digital age has changed how the world communicates, processes information, and defines relationships. With that said, culture is bombarded with the realities of living in a digital age that leaves them paralyzed by too much information. This session is about helping students develop their purpose, discern the digital age through the lenses of the Gospel, and practical ways to reveal Jesus through their social media platforms. This is a must.
