MISSION CANADA URBAN ASSOCIATE
Ministry Location: Mississauga, ON
Ministry Focus: Urban Ministry
The Lifestream Initiative exists to discover, disseminate and facilitate new opportunities for churches to love their neighbours. Current areas of focus include the mental health needs of First Responder and their families, mental health education for faith leaders, and assisting churches to become more engaged in their communities. With a primary emphasis on Mississauga, Ontario, Canada's sixth largest city, the initiative serves to bring Christian leaders together and make new connections between and among those engaged in a variety of ministries.
Current initiatives include working with the City of Mississauga Emergency Management Office to involve local churches in raising the level of citizen/family resilience and preparation for severe weather events and other types of disasters. To date this has included encouraging the creation of a booklet on how to keep your family safe during such events. Download the city’s free Emergency Guide here: EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS GUIDE
It also involves urging the city to adopt a program to enlist and prepare local churches as emergency shelters.
A long-term initiative currently in process with Indwell Community Homes promotes the development of three supported affordable housing facilities, along with added supports for those with mental health or other challenges. The first home, called Lakeshore Lofts, has 68 units and is located at 1639 Lakeshore Road West and hosts a Christian Foodbank on the ground floor.
The second site is under construction on Thomas Street in Streetsville.
A third site has recently been purchased at Lakeshore Road West in Clarkson Village.
Prayer is a key part of the ministry, with a monthly prayer meeting running since 2012. Currently, we meet online once a month to focus on the needs of individual pastors. This has proved to be a tremendous blessing to these spiritual leaders of Mississauga as well as to our team of intercessors.
