The Emmaus Way is an urban ministry inspired by Jesus' encounter with two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35). Walking in despair, Jesus came alongside, listening to their story, entering their journey, opened the scriptures, and shared a meal with them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized that the risen Christ had been walking with them all along. In His presence, their hope was restored.
Over the years, Barbara has met many people walking their own Emmaus road. Some carry visible burdens of poverty, housing and food insecurity, trauma, isolation, or the rebuilding life in a new country. Others carry burdens not easily seen, like loneliness, grief, disappointment, anxiety, or the quiet loss of hope. Repeatedly, Barbara is reminded that while many practical needs are visible, some of the deepest needs of the human heart are not.
The Emmaus story has become the lens through which Barbara understands ministry. The Emmaus Way grew from the conviction that one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person is our presence. Through shared meals, scripture, prayer, practical support, and genuine relationships, Barbara walks alongside individuals and families, creating spaces where people are welcomed, heard, valued, and reminded that they are never walking alone.
