PAOC Global Workers: Yves & Francoise Michaud
For the last 20 years, pastor Bird has been sheltering Karen women and children experiencing domestic violence in his church. Among the Karen in this area, child marriage is prevalent. Generally, children are married between 14 and 16. Alcoholism and drug use are common among the male population, leading to violence against their families. Women who are new converts are the most vulnerable as they are often rejected by their paternal families because of their faith and for fear of reprisals from angry husbands. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, these factors contributed to a severe domestic abuse problem but the pandemic has exacerbated these issues. This has increased the number of women and children in need of help and shelter.
Project Summary:
1. Address domestic violence in the community by building the Abigail Refuge for Karen Women to provide women and children proper temporary quarters to shelter in on the church grounds.
2. Give safe access to the church for the Karen people by:
a. Reinforcing and repairing the bridge and securing it against flood damage and erosion.
b. Surfacing the road with concrete and ensuring proper drainage. These drainage pipes will benefit the irrigation canals of farmers lower on the mountain.
Thank you for helping us make the Mae Win church a place where violent husbands get help and meet Jesus as they come repentant to recover their families after a devastating drinking episode. Thank you for helping us build this refuge where traumatized women and children learn to turn to the Lord for comfort and hope.
Project Goal: $80,000 | Funds Raised YTD: $20,000
