A Call to Remember and Walk Well With One Another

Dear PAOC family,

On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), we pause as a Fellowship to honour residential school survivors, remember the children who never returned, and reflect on our shared path toward healing. It is a sobering reality that this year marks just 30 years since the last residential school closed in Canada.

As followers of Christ, we affirm that every person is created in the Imago Dei—the image of God—possessing sacred worth and dignity. Facing painful truths about past harms, including the spiritual and cultural impact of the residential school system, is vital to living out the gospel with integrity.

Our commitment to this journey is ongoing. In 2012, PAOC leadership and Indigenous leadership established a foundational milestone through a national Forgiveness and Reconciliation Event, formally acknowledging past failures, insensitivities, and silence regarding residential school harms. We invite you to read the full 2012 Apology Statement as we continue building on these commitments.

Reconciliation is not a single day of observance, but a long-term commitment to listen humbly, honour diversity, and walk together in restored relationships. May the Holy Spirit grant us grace and wisdom as we endeavour to journey together in a good way.
