Choosing Joy

Choosing Joy

Growing up in a Canadian, middle-class family, I’ve had my share of both struggles and joys. But the one common thread that seems to bind this myriad of emotions are the circumstances that surround me. They uncannily wield power over the way I react and feel. To me, this was normal – a part of acceptable human behaviour. I have come to discover, however, that there are a rare few that seem to transcend this sort of emotional rollercoaster. Living in India for ten years, I have had the privilege of observing certain individuals who choose unwavering joy through the direst of situations. To be honest, I feel that in a culture and country where many struggle to maintain their basic needs, joy abounds, and the depressed are a minority.
