Do you pray for needs around the world yet can’t bring yourself to believe for those nearest to you? Are you a pastor who shares Jesus from the platform but struggles to bring Him into your neighbourhood? Have roadblocks to your life’s call left you frustrated? Maybe you have just grown weary of trying. Your walk with Christ invades every relationship, especially those closest to home. How can we be a faithful presence in our families and communities?
To know Jesus is our purpose in life, our raison d’être. We come to know Christ by meeting Him in the Scriptures. As we personally experience Him in the Word, the Spirit is at work transforming our lives. So how did Jesus live? How should we, as His followers, be living today in Canada? Through spiritual, theological and missional vitality, we long to see the mission of our Fellowship fulfilled: “To glorify God by making disciples everywhere by proclaiming and practising the gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
The desired result is that as we read this book, we will be inspired and full of gratitude for the faithfulness of God and of those mentioned in these stories, and we will be invigorated and informed regarding how the Lord of the church is leading us today and into the future. As we have “ears to hear” what the Spirit is speaking to us, we believe we will experience the “above and beyond” blessing and harvest that God intends for the PAOC in our next century of ministry, nationally and internationally.
Arising from churches and leaders who are alive in spirit and in truth, we envision a movement that is missionally vital, both in Canada and globally. The exciting thing that A Shared Vision celebrates is that there is a strong missional impulse among us. As you read the various stories of revitalization and multiplication, I believe you will be both informed and inspired. These testimonies of God’s work among us will leave congregations and leaders with hope—no matter their size, age or context.
The clear integration of spiritual vitality with theological vitality, resulting in missional vitality, is a reality that evidences itself in both our personal lives and corporate ministries. The nexus—the meeting points of these—becomes evident by the life that is either demonstrated or not seen. Nexus is intended to call us as Pentecostal people to evaluate those intersections where Spirit, truth and mission meet in our lives and ministries.
It is our hope that this book will serve as a renewed challenge to leaders throughout our Fellowship—a challenge to consider
all the ways we can live out our faith in the best interests of God’s plan for redemption in our churches, our communities, and our nation. Together, let’s engage with heart and mind the insights our friends share with us in this book
and allow the Holy Spirit to shape us more into the Christ-following leaders He desires us to be.
As a Pentecostal family, it continues to be our call, our passion and our desire to be empowered by the Spirit to be Christ’s witnesses, in word and deed. But there is one question that has continually arisen in the minds of many of us who want to share our faith but feel somewhat intimidated by the new and continually emerging challenges we are facing in our society. How can we effectively share our faith in Christ within our current Canadian context? The diversity we face as a Pentecostal family in Canada and around the world demands creative, apostolic approaches to being His witnesses.
Generosity is a core value in authentic Christianity and we do want to see each individual, each church and each ministry in the PAOC expand its generosity quotient. It is our prayer that as you read this booklet, you will not only expand personally in dimensions of generosity, but that you would be able to utilize the themes and content in the book to encourage the people you serve and lead in increased generosity.
In Tenacious, we have invited a cross section of authors to tell their story of how God, by His Spirit, has worked through them in a number of contexts of ministry to see fruitfulness and lasting impact. Lasting fruit in our lives and ministries comes as a result of the Spirit’s work. The stories in each chapter illustrate the Galatians 6:8 principle that as we sow to please the Spirit, from the Spirit we will reap eternal life. Thank God for the fruitfulness of churches and leaders who believe that faithful, fruitful ministry over extended periods of time is a very Pentecostal thing to do. By their fruit of transformed and discipled lives they are known.
As a Fellowship, we have an excellent theological foundation—demonstrated by our Statement of Fundamental and Essential Truths—that is biblical and defensible. Of course, there are some clauses that generate ongoing discussion. But the core beliefs of what it means to be a Canadian Pentecostal in our day are biblically solid. As you read the theological contributions by Jeromey Martini, Roger Stronstad, Will Sloos and Van Johnson, be encouraged to re-engage what you know to be true regarding Christ as Saviour, Baptizer, Healer and Coming King.
Very early on in this book, you will discover this consistent and compelling theme statement: “The most effective agents of change in society are radically transformed disciples of Jesus who are rooted in His church.” Churches, ministries and leaders within the PAOC are committed to developing and empowering those types of disciples. Followers of Jesus who live not to please themselves or to fulfil their own agendas, but who are marked by a passion to see Jesus formed in themselves and others … at any cost … anywhere. From this vantage point, they are able to influence others for God’s glory.
David Wells shares his vision for our work together in our Fellowship in the book What I See. Hear his heart on our need to be a relationally based mission family—grounded in our relationship with God through prayer, and enjoying genuine community in our relationships with each other. As you turn its pages, sense and share his passion and anticipation for what God will do among and through us as we attune our hearts to His leading. The needs in our churches and communities are so evident, and His call to respond effectively and with a unified approach so strong.
The emphasis on the Holy Spirit as Counselor is the theme of this contemporary preaching/discipleship series entitled The Coach in Your Corner. This series is a follow-up to The Kingdom Conspiracy series, and is intended for use during the 50-day period between Easter Sunday and Pentecost Sunday. The Coach in Your Corner will focus on the specific and personal work of the Spirit in recruiting for kingdom purposes, spiritual gifting, calling to a position, providing ongoing and necessary guidance, empowerment (the fullness of the Spirit), and performance (the fruit of the Spirit). A devotional, small group and small group leader’s guide are included in the ministry package.
