MISSION CANADA URBAN WORKER
Ministry Location: Montreal, QC
Ministry Focus: Urban Ministry
The first question people ask Pastor Jean-Marc on the street is: "Are you a real pastor?" This is often how contact is made with those he meets along the way.
We must become more aware of the fact that people are outside the churches and that the challenge is to meet them where they are. Today is no different from the times when Jesus did 80% of His ministry on the street. The challenge of being a Pasteur de rue(street pastor) hasn't changed either.
Pastor Jean-Marc has been in ministry for 30 years in various cities in the world in a rather "classical manner", as he says. It is with this experience that he is now starting church teams participating in this ambitious program all over Quebec, in partnership with all key actors in the community. Jean-Marc reaches out in a way that is both appropriate and relevant, sharing the gospel in Quebec among an increasing population that is experiencing a growing wave of immigration. His experience in Europe and Africa helps him better understand the challenges of these newcomers who need help in various ways.
Pasteur de rue is a response to the invitation of Jesus when He said, "Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame." Just like in many other provinces, people in Quebec (8 million plus), are struggling today with the same handicaps. By day or by night, Pasteur de rue patrols with teams made up of men and women committed in their faith and trained so as to serve their communities and their fellow citizens. Jean-Marc finds himself on the streets of Montreal … because we must!
